Our Building
Our church building is currently closed as we undergo a major re-ordering project. Thanks to an initial investment from the national Church of England, we have embarked on a £2.5 million project to transform the interior of St. Cuthbert's. We want to ensure that our space is not only aesthetically pleasing but also accessible and equipped to offer a wide range of activities and events. We see a future where there is uplifting worship and exploration of the Christian faith, inspiring music and theatre, welcoming hospitality, high-quality spaces for conferences and meetings, engaging heritage experiences, and community outreach and service. Our intention is to introduce much improved access, a welcome area at the entrance to the building, key hospitality facilities, a new floor across the nave and transepts, flexible seating, and high-quality audiovisual and lighting installations.
Our site also includes a large church hall built in the 1970s, which includes: a large and versatile events space for up to 120 people; kitchen and toilet facilities; a smaller break out space suitable for meetings of 15-20 people; and the parish office, all of which are utilised by the congregation and the wider community.
If you think our buildings could be the perfect venue for your group or event, please contact us for hire information or to make booking enquiries.
Step into St. Cuthbert's
Step into the historic church of St Cuthbert in Darlington, a stunning 12th-century place of worship steeped in tradition, architectural beauty and rich history dating back to when the Saxon township and church were first established. This drone footage takes you on a breathtaking aerial tour of the church's interior, showcasing the impressive architecture, intricate stone carvings, majestic arches, stunning stained-glass windows and serene atmosphere.
As we soar above the pews and glide past ancient pillars, you'll catch glimpses of delicate details often overlooked from the ground, including the medieval wooden roof and the details on the 15th century stone screen that divides the choir from the nave. The church's remarkable design is a testament to its custodians, who have protected and preserved this beloved landmark over the centuries.
St. Cuthbert's Church has for generations graced the marketplace of Darlington. However, the dignified architecture of the 'Lady of the North' has done more than simply adorn the centre of the town. To each generation its presence has witnessed the Good News of Jesus Christ: it has been an oasis of prayer and a sanctuary of stillness in each generation's busy lives.
So join us as we explore the sacred spaces, uncover hidden details and celebrate the community that makes St. Cuthbert's more than just a building. With ongoing restoration projects, including the current Opening Doors Project, this drone tour offers a unique glimpse into the church's past, present and future.
